ELD and Hours of Service: reviewing driver logs
An Electronic Logging Device (ELD) records driving-related data used for Hours of Service (HOS) records. Safety specialists review the entries and the context behind them.
The ELD rule relates to records of duty status (RODS). FMCSA explains that it generally applies to drivers required to keep RODS, subject to specific exceptions. A device records data, but reviewing its accuracy remains a human task. FMCSA: ELD rule ↗
What a Safety specialist reviews
- Duty status and timeline.Compare driving, on-duty and rest entries with the sequence of the trip.
- Trip context.Check whether available supporting documents match the date and route.
- Exceptions and corrections. When a log raises a question, investigate the cause and document the follow-up.
- Inspection readiness.Confirm the driver knows how to display or transfer records to an authorized inspector.
Why the ELD screen alone is not enough
Supporting documents help compare hours-of-service entries with events during the day. FMCSA provides guidance on which supporting materials may be used and retained under the applicable rule.
Practice in the Safety curriculum
HOS and ELD are covered in the third Safety Department module. Fictional cases connect recorded hours to trip documents and the specialist's next decision. Safety Department ↗
